Egerton University VC Attends Installation of Tharaka University’s First Chancellor
On September 13th, 2024, Tharaka University marked a significant milestone with the installation of its first Chancellor, Professor Emeritus Ratemo W. Michieka. The event, held on the university’s Main Campus, was a key moment for the institution, which received its charter in 2022.

Egerton University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac O. Kibwage, was among the distinguished guests who attended the event. His presence demonstrated support for Tharaka University as it continues to grow within Kenya’s higher education sector. The installation ceremony was presided over by Tharaka University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peter Muriungi, and featured the participation of senior figures in academia and government.
The Cabinet Secretary for Education, Hon. Julius M. Ogamba, former Cabinet Secretary Prof. Jacob T. Kaimenyi, and Hon. Francis Muthaura, the former Head of Civil Service, were among the high-profile attendees. Leadership from other public universities, including the Vice Chancellor of Embu University Prof. Daniel Mugendi, who also serves as the Chairman of the Vice Chancellors Committee, were also present. Representatives from more than ten public universities, including Karatina, Chuka University, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, Alupe University, Kaimosi University, Meru University, ICA University and Kisii University, joined in showing solidarity.
Prof. Michieka, in his acceptance speech, expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him. He committed to guiding Tharaka University as it aims for academic excellence and innovation. The university community, including Council Members, Faculty, Students, and local leaders, warmly welcomed the new Chancellor, signalling broad support for his leadership.
The installation marks a new era for Tharaka University as it positions itself to significantly impact education and research. With Prof. Michieka at the helm, the university aims to achieve its goals of academic growth and societal contributions.
